The Magic Behind a Perfectly Planned Proposal

There’s nothing quite like photographing a proposal—the genuine reactions, the laughter, the adrenaline. It’s electric, joyful, and something I’ll truly never get tired of. I love witnessing the giddiness that usually follows her, the nerves he’s carrying leading up to the big moment, and the thoughtful planning behind this declaration of love—whether it’s intimate or grand.

Having photographed over 25 proposals (and counting!) in destinations near and far, I still catch myself smiling behind the camera every single time. These moments always take me back to my own fairytale proposal.

My husband proposed to me on a small bridge at Lake Eola on December 23, 2019—so small, in fact, that our photographer was standing on a different bridge and completely missed the moment. There were no decorations or grand gestures… but it was so us. That bridge was where, two years earlier, he first thought, “I could marry this girl.” Now, every holiday season, we return to Lake Eola, walk beneath the Christmas lights, and relive that memory together. ( And don't worry, we still got some photos after!)

When it comes to planning the perfect proposal, it’s not about extravagant bells and whistles—it’s about creating a moment that’s deeply personal and true to your story. This guide is here to help you do just that.

The Place:

Pick a Meaningful Spot

When it comes to planning a proposal, the location sets the tone. Orlando and Central Florida are full of incredible spots—scenic parks, gardens, lakefronts, theme parks, and charming neighborhoods—that make the moment unforgettable.

The most meaningful spot doesn’t have to be famous or on a “top 10” list. Maybe it’s the place you shared your first kiss, your favorite date spot, a private residence that means something to you family, or a quiet garden tucked away in Winter Park or Kissimmee. These personal touches are what make the moment uniquely yours.

The People: Include Loved Ones—or Keep It Intimate

Decide who will be part of the moment. Some couples love having friends or family nearby to cheer, while others prefer a private, intimate moment. Are you each introverted or extroverted? Do you like attention?

Busy public spots, like popular Orlando parks or waterfront areas, can attract attention, so keeping it small can help keep the focus on your connection.

Afterward, you can celebrate with loved ones nearby, creating the best of both worlds.

The Pictures: Hire a Photographer You Trust

This is my favorite part (no surprise there 😉).

A skilled photographer can help plan logistics, scout the location in advance, and capture every genuine reaction without interrupting the moment. Whether you want someone hidden until the big “yes” or ready to celebrate immediately afterward, having a strategy ensures you’ll get those once-in-a-lifetime shots.

I often suggest a couple of easy tricks to keep the surprise seamless:

  1. Save my number under a friendly alias in his phone so it doesn’t raise suspicion.
  2. Share their location with me via Find My Friends, so I can quietly track their whereabouts without constant texts or check-ins.

With these little hacks in place, I can stay in position and ready to capture every magical reaction—effortlessly and stress-free.

The Personal Touches: Make It Uniquely Yours

Think through little touches that make the moment feel personal and thoughtful:

  • Does she have her nails done? (If not, have a close friend invite her to get them done.)
  • Should you ask her father or a loved one for permission, to honor them?
  • Do you want a setup? Candles, rose petals, a sign, or even cold sparks can all elevate the moment. You can hire a planning service to handle this, or recruit a close friend—so all you have to do is focus on the proposal itself!
  • Do you have a speech prepared? Even a few notes written down can help you say exactly what’s in your heart.

These personal touches make the proposal feel intentional, romantic, and completely you. 💛

Orlando-Area Proposal Locations

Some of my favorite Orlando-area proposal locations include:

✨ Harry P. Leu Gardens (Orlando) – Lush greenery, winding pathways, and intimate corners perfect for romantic, private moments.
✨ Mead Botanical Gardens (Winter Park) – Tall trees, vibrant florals, peaceful waterways, and a charming amphitheater.
✨ Central Park Rose Garden (Winter Park) – Classic, timeless elegance with beautiful blooms, yet just steps from the energy of Park Avenue.
✨ Cypress Grove Park (Orlando) – Stunning lakefront views, tall oaks, reflective waters, a gorgeous gazebo, and dreamy sunset light.
✨ Kissimmee Lakefront Park – A waterfront location with a lighthouse backdrop that’s perfect for engagement photos.
✨ Cocoa Beach – Near the pier is my go-to spot; beach proposals can be effortless and naturally beautiful.
✨ Celebration Town Center (Celebration, FL) – Magical year-round with charming streets and classic Florida architecture.

These locations offer flexibility, privacy, and breathtaking backdrops—without the stress of crowded tourist areas.

If you’re looking for something a bit more magical and don’t mind a few onlookers:

✨ Local Resorts & Hotels – Many have hidden gems, fountains, or scenic spots ideal for proposals. Some of my favorites include Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, JW Marriott Orlando, and resort locations with unique architecture and views.

For couples who are Orlando locals planning a destination proposal, I’ve also captured proposals across the country. One of my favorites was on a mountainside at Antelope Island in Salt Lake City, Utah—proof that the perfect proposal can happen anywhere.

Final Planning Tips

Pick the Right Time of Day

Timing matters. Sunrise and morning sessions mean fresh hair and makeup, soft light, and fewer onlookers. Sunset creates warm, golden-hour magic, with glowing skies that feel cinematic. Consider what time of day suits your energy and your story. Even after-dark could work, under a firework sky or nearby some Christmas lights. 🌅💍

Consider Proposing Early in Your Trip

If you’re on vacation and not local to Orlando, proposing early in your trip can help you relax and celebrate throughout your trip. You won’t worry about end-of-trip fatigue, and you can enjoy everything Orlando has to offer without pressure.

Have a Celebration Plan

After the proposal, keep the joy going! Book dinner at a favorite restaurant, take a walk along a scenic lakefront, or plan a nearby resort stay. Even if friends and family aren’t present for the actual “yes,” invite them to celebrate afterward—these moments make the memory even sweeter.

No matter the spot, the principle is the same: make it personal, capture it authentically, and celebrate your story.
